A private walking tour is a great option for those who want to get to know Reykjavík in a personal and intimate way.
The tour is like a crash course in everything Reykjavík with a new friend that can’t wait to show you their quirky little city. The aim is for you to leave the tour hearting Reykjavík too and with your head full of ideas about what to do next!
Because our tour is a private activity, we can tailor the speed and content of the tour to your needs and interest so whether you want to cover a lot of ground in a short period of time or take it easy and taste some local delicacies on the way – we got you covered.
If a private tour is out of your budget, we recommend this food walk as an alternative way to get to know Reykjavík through its food.
About this tour
The I Heart Reykjavík walking tour is not your typical run-of-the-mill walking tour. We designed it to help you make the most of your stay in Reykjavík and get you ready to explore on your own after the tour.
In our view, Reykjavík’s charm is not about big landmarks and must-see tourists spots, although it can be nice to see those too. To us, it’s about the friendly people, atmospheric bars and cafes and all charming little details. And that’s exactly what we want to show you on this tour.
What to expect on the tour
We believe you will get the best tour if we start the tour at Hallgrímskirkja Church so unless we agree on something different, we start there and we usually end by Austurvöllur square. While we walk (at a comfortable and leisurely pace) we will tell you a little bit about the history of Reykjavík, show you a few of our favorite places and point out cozy restaurants, charming cafés and happy hour worthy bars along the way. We don’t necessarily recommend the fanciest places in town (we can tell you where they are if you want to know) but just places we enjoy or that have been recommended to us by friends, family and your fellow travelers.
On the tour, you will see important landmarks such as Hallgrímskirkja church, Harpa music hall and the House of Parliament but you will also meet friendly cats, see amazing murals and learn about what it is that we think makes Reykjavík so special.
Because this is a private tour we can make accommodations if there’s anything, in particular, you want to see that isn’t normally covered on our tours. Because we travel on foot, though, there are some restrictions to where we can go within the time frame given but we’ll try our best.
Who should not book this tour
If you are a history buff and you are looking for a more history-focused tour – this tour is probably not your best bet. Although we do spend some time on the history of the city it’s not our main focus and there’s just so much more than that we want to show you! But we will happily point you to the best places to dig deeper into the history after the tour.
Make the most of your Reykjavík stay with these additional extras that you can add to your booking in the checkout process.
Guided tour around Harpa Music Hall
Harpa Music Hall is one of our favorite buildings in Reykjavík and the guided tour is a great addition to your walking tour with us. Learn about the architecture of the building, the state of the art sound engineering and snoop around areas that are otherwise closed to the public (such as Eldborg main hall).
The Harpa guided tour starts at 14:00 every day and takes 30 minutes. It’s an ideal addition to private walking tours starting at 9:00, 9:30, 10:00, 10:30 or 11:00. If you would like to do the guided tour on a different date from the walking tour, that can also be arranged.
Price: 2000 ISK per person.
Please be in touch if you’re traveling with children under 16 years of age or seniors/disabled guests as discounts may apply.
Wonders of Iceland and Áróra Northern Lights Show at Perlan Museum
Perlan Museum is one of our favorite museums in Reykjavík but it gives a great insight into the nature and geology of Iceland. Walk through an indoor ice cave, learn about the geology of Iceland and top it off with Iceland’s only planiterium for an impressive Northern Lights experience.
The ticket includes access to Perlan Museum’s observation deck that offers 360 views of the whole city.
Price: 4490 ISK per person
If you’re traveling with kids, please be in touch as family discounts may apply
The meeting place for this tour is by Hallgrímskirkja church. More detailed information about how to find us will be sent when the booking is confirmed.
Pickup at your hotel
We can offer pickup services at selected hotels in downtown Reykjavík.
Because we will travel by foot to meet you, and because we believe you will get the most out of the tour if we start it in a pre-defined area, we can only meet you at the hotels listed in the dropdown menu of our booking engine.
I have a child with me that is 12 years old or younger, do I include them with the number of adults in the booking form?
No, just include the adults. In the booking process, you will be asked whether you’re traveling with kids under 13 and given a chance to tell us their age.
I have a group that is bigger than 12 people / I can’t make the times you offer work, can you help?
If you have a bigger group or the time you are looking for is not available, please send us an e-mail and we will see what we can do for you. Please remember to include the date and time and the size of your group in the e-mail.
Can you give me an exact itinerary for this tour?
No, every single tour is different because every guest is different.
We always have a basic route in mind which we have designed to give you a great introduction to the city but we tailor the tour to your interests and needs as we go. That’s the beauty of private tours!
I read online/in my guide book that you did a small daily group tour – is this not it?
For personal reasons, we stopped offering our daily group walking tours that were recommended in many guide books (such as Rick Steve’s Iceland) in the fall of 2018. This was a difficult decision but one we needed to make for ourselves and our family.
Is the price per person?
No, the price is per tour and not per person. Therefore, it’s the same price whether you book for one or four people, for example.
Why can’t I book, confirm and pay for the tour right away like the rest of the tours offered on the page?
Unfortunately our booking engine is not intelligent enough to work around our schedule so we have to manually accept every booking and we don’t want to charge your card unil we’re sure that we can accept your booking.
How long does it usually take you to accept or deny bookings?
First of all, we try to accommodate every booking if we possibly can so it doesn’t happen often that we have to say no. It usually takes us less than 24 hours to accept bookings but if the day you requested is already quite full, we may need to rearrange things which can take a bit more time. You can always expect an answer within 48 hours.
The cancellation policy for this tour is as follows:
- Cancellations received more than 48 hours in advance: 90% refund is given
- Cancellations received within 48 hours of departure: no refund is given
We will wait for you at our agreed upon meeting place for 30 minutes. If you don’t show up and we don’t hear from you, we will consider you a no-show.
Please note that if that happens, we cannot promise that we can reschedule your tour and no refunds will be given.
