Weather in Reykjavík

One of the things I am often asked about is what the weather in Reykjavík is like and how one should dress. Instead of writing a lengthy post about it, here you can see live information from the Icelandic Met Office.

Here are a few pointers for you though:

  • When it rains in Iceland, more often than not it rains from every direction – except maybe the one you would expect.
  • The key thing to remember when visiting Iceland during winter is layering. The weather is very unpredictable and on a sunny day during winter it can be relatively warm and then turn to ice cold when the sun sets. Reykjavík cafés are also really really fond of candles so if you have something very big and thick on you will roast once inside a café.
  • Although the numbers on the forcast suggest you should be wearing fleece from head to toe – everything above 15°C is considered good weather in Iceland and the locals will wear shorts.
  • It doesn’t get that cold during winter – the killer thing is the wind.
