What’s on in Reykjavík: What not to miss in June 2011

A new month has emerged (some days ago actually) and it’s time to take a look at what’s on in Reykjavík in June 2011. You can also use the nifty What’s on in Reykjavík page that is updated almost daily (there’s just so damn much going on in this city!)

June’s Highlight: Gus Gus in Nasa

Gus Gus - Arabian Horse

Gus Gus is possibly the best live band Iceland has ever seen and they’ve just come out with a new album: Arabian Horse. The album is amazing by the way. To celebrate they are playing a show in Nasa Saturday June 18th. The initial plan was to play one show but since it sold out almost instantly they added another show later in the night or at 23:59 exactly. There are still some tickets available for the second show and you can buy one on midi.is.

Did I mention that they are awesome? (OK not the best video but you catch my drift)

Second best

The next week or so seems to be pretty promising in Faktorý bar. The Whitsunday weekend and the week leading to it is packed with events but you can see more about them  below. I’m particularly intrigued with Forgotten Lores and Berndsen Wednesday June 8th.

And all the rest

Not sure I agree with the
‘best’ comment after seeing SR at Somerset House a few year back. But I do love the what’s on and month guides! Something that is far better than some of the other Iceland/Reykjavik sites I’ve been on. You don’t seem to have an obsession with horses for a start!

I did say “possibly” the best :)

My favourite Sigurrós show ever was just after they released Ágætis Byrjun way back when. They played a gig in a place called Hlaðvarpinn and it was 50-100 people tops and the place was packed (very small venue!). I was sitting just by the stage and Jónsi’s bow almost touched my nose every time he moved it on his guitar. It was so intimate and so intense and that album obviously is one of the best ever!

Having said all that, I really do think that Gus Gus deserves the “possibly best” stamp.
